Nasa Mochizuki works as an editor for a web magazine. She happens to meet Sota Yanase, who tells her that he can not have romantic relationships with women. He makes a living as a boy-for-hire, renting himself out as a friend. In order to verify his claim, she rents Sota as a friend, as “rental-kun”.

Rent a Friend was premiered in 2018 at Tokyo International Film Festival within the Film Splash section. It also had a great reception at MOOSIC LAB International Film Festival and the Australian Japanese Film Festival.
